Valentine's day is celebrated on the 14th of February to remember the death of Saint Valentine in 296 AD, how lovely?! Over the last 1,726 years it slowly become one of the most romantic days of the year, we now celebrate with heart-shaped gifts, flowers, cute teddies, and if your lucky a fancy candlelit dinner. So let's have a look at some of the inspirational couples:
Marie & Pierre Curie (1895–1906)
In 1903 they were awarded the noble prize for physics for their work on the discovery of polonium and radium and their work would go on to change medicine forever with radiography. Only Pierre was named on the award but he stood up for Marie, and soon she was the first-ever woman to be awarded a noble prize. In 1911 Marie was awarded her second noble prize this time in chemistry, even now she is the only woman to win 2 noble prizes in two different scientific fields. After Pierre's death, she took over his professorship and became the first female professor at the university.
Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King (1951 – 1968)
Incredibly famous for his “I have a dream” speech, Dr. King and his future sweetheart met at university and would go on to change the world as civil rights leaders. Following Dr. King's assassination in 1968, Coretta became involved in the woman's rights movement and fought to make Dr. King’s birthday a national holiday in America.
Jay-Z and Beyoncé (2008- )
After 14 years of marriage but nearly 21 years together, there's no modern-day power couple like Bey and Jay-Z, household names and chart-topping musicians, from ‘Crazy in Love’ (2003) to their joint album ‘Everything Is Love’ (2018) they have dominated the magazines and headlines.
