Celebrating World Mental Health Day – How Our Work Supports Mental Health

Caitlin Puddle

World Mental Health Day is celebrated every year on 10 October

What small actions can you perform to acknowledge the importance of today? Advocating for mental health doesn't have to be complicated. Take this list as an example of where to start:

1.      Reach out to friends and family to check on their mental health.

2.      Take the time to reflect on your mental wellbeing and identify areas for improvement.

3.      Take a break from routine by engaging in something creative or physical to relax your mind.

4.      Make sure to take some time in your day to do something that brings you joy, even if you are busy.

5.      Participate in a community event or volunteer your time to help others—small acts that create a meaningful impact can improve your own mental health.

The theme for World Mental Health Day this year, as set by the World Federation of Mental Health, is Workplace Mental Health. Employers should consider what they can do to improve the mental wellbeing of those under their supervision, and employees should consider whether they need to be more vocal in advocating for their mental health. At Rewise Learning, we are proud to offer hybrid, flexible working hours for our employees. This allows workers to organise their work schedules around their personal lives, which leaves time to prioritise mental well-being. Making reasonable adjustments to support employees' mental health can enhance productivity and foster a stronger sense of community at work.

At Rewise Learning, we are passionate about promoting mental health awareness. While our workshops cover a wide range of skills and topics, they also significantly benefit mental wellbeing. Our educational workshops in schools offer a break from the repetition and monotony of the regular school schedule. This allows learners to exercise different areas of their mind, while learning about the wider world and discovering careers they may not have considered before. The monotony of attending the same lessons every week can become mentally exhausting. Our model offers an alternative strategy that engages learners in practical activities that boost their skills, confidence, and mental wellbeing. Hands-on learning is often lacking in traditional school settings, particularly in secondary education. However, research shows that people feel happier when they can create and engage in tangible tasks.

Our community music workshops are another great way that Rewise Learning makes learning fun. The workshops educate participants about music production, lyric writing techniques, and also impart a sense of local pride. These sessions are fantastic for unleashing creativity and nurturing the soul. Plus, after only two workshops, you’ll leave with a completed song, giving you a real sense of accomplishment.

Our collaboration with the Traumatic Brain Injury Service at Morriston Hospital has helped establish support systems for individuals suffering from brain injuries. Through educational workshops funded by the Shared Prosperity Fund, we’ve helped empower participants to rebuild their lives and careers. Learners have been supported in expressing their personal challenges to their families through creative outlets such as poetry, filmmaking, and animation. By providing a means to communicate personal experiences, we can help build connections and enhance mental well-being, ensuring people feel seen, heard, and understood.

Mental health is at the heart of everything we do at Rewise Learning. Our workshops and projects are designed to achieve positive social impact, with a strong emphasis on improving mental well-being. Through creative engagement, we build environments where mental health naturally plays an important role, empowering participants to thrive personally, professionally and socially.
